Benign Paroxsysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): An algorithm for clinicians
Dalton Gilligan, PT, DPT
Posterior Canal Evaluation
"Clinicians should diagnose posterior semicircular canal BPPV when vertigo associated with nystagmus is provoked by the Dix-Hallpike maneuver (Bhattacharyya et al., 2008)."

Bhattacharyya et al., 2008 makes a strong recommendation based on diagnostic studies with minor limitations and a preponderance of benefit over harm (Bhattacharyya et al., 2008).

The Dix-Hallpike maneuver is considered the gold standard test for the diagnosis of posterior canal BPPV (Bhattacharyya et al., 2008).
The Side-Lying Test can be used if a patient cannot extend the head sufficiently, or lie on their back.
